— Swiss Legacy

Shortly after being fired from Apple, Steve Jobs founded NeXT, the somewhat short-lived but revolutionary company focused on higher education and business services. This fascinating PBS documentary, titled The Entrepreneurs and filmed in 1986, offers a rare glimpse of Jobs’ original vision with NeXT, from his aspirations for higher education and simulated learning environments to his decision-making process on price point and product features to his approach to company culture and motivational morale.

Opening at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs on Friday is the retrospective ‘Goudemalion’ of the work of defining 80s art director and photographer Jean-Paul Goude. A highlight of this season’s cultural programme, it will be the first ever retrospective of Goude’s work, now iconic on the French advertising and fashion scenes. Conceived as a giant installation retracing his 40 year career, there will be 6 special areas dedicated to his most influential projects: Toukie Smith, Les Galeries Lafayette, Grace Jones, cut-up slides, neon furniture and Chanel.

Otl Aicher, Gestalter

Otl Aicher (1922–1991) was perhaps the most influential designer in postwar West Germany. He became famous for his design of the commercial face of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and his sport pictographs, and created the logos for large Germany companies such as Braun, Lufthansa, and BMW. As cofounder and later head of the pioneering Ulm School of Design, Aicher left his mark on whole generations of graphic designers. His connection to the circle around the resistance movement The White Rose was formative for his political involvement. He was married to Inge Aicher-Scholl, sister of Hans and Sophie Scholl, core members of the movement who were executed in 1943.

For this first critical biography, Eva Moser interviewed Aicher’s companions, family members, clients, and friends. Her text is supplemented by private family and professional photos as well as selected examples of Aicher’s seminal design ideas.

After years in the making ‘Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design‘ will be available next month.

This long awaited title on one of the greatest American designers of the 20th century has been written by distinguished design historian Pat Kirkham, who knew Bass personally, and is designed by his daughter, Jennifer Bass. As well as hundreds of images of Bass’ life and work, some of which are previously unpublished, there is a foreword by Martin Scorsese.

The release of the book is also being marked by a special event at MoMA on November 14th, featuring the New York premiere of Saul and Elaine Bass’ Academy Award-winning short ‘Why Man Creates’, 1968 (newly preserved by the Academy Film Archive). Among the evening’s guest presenters are the book’s author, Pat Kirkham, a distinguished design historian; Chip Kidd, the award-winning contemporary graphic designer and writer noted for his brilliant book covers; and Kyle Cooper, a legendary graphic designer in his own right, with such unforgettable film title sequences as Se7en, X-Men: First Class, the Spider Man trilogy, and countless others.
