The brief was to create an aesthetically pleasing and useful multiplication table for children, but one which would look great up on their parents’ wall. With so much information to impart, it had primarily to work for it’s intended purpose – as an aid to study. Unnecessary design fripperies were out. The result gave free reign to the studio’s ‘type’ nerds; hopefully contributing to the numerical literacy of a new generation (and creating a few more ‘type’ obsessives) in the process.

Michal Batory, craftsman of the poster

22 January–20 March 2011
Les Arts Décoratifs
107, rue de Rivoli – 75001 Paris, France.

Following the graphic design duo Antoine et Manuel, the poster artist Michal Batory is the next to respond to an invitation by Les Arts Décoratifs. A selection of a hundred posters retrace Batory’s creative universe, principally in the fields of dance, theatre, literature and music. His photographic posters are original visual responses infused with Surrealist poetry, and the emotion they instil in us has etched his images in collective memory. For this first major retrospective in a French museum, Michal Batory has also decided to share his creative process by inviting us into his home and workplace.

Print-process is the new sister company to the online print shop Blanka. Print-Process was born out of the concept of creating print in a more democratic and liberating way for the customers.

With Print-Process the idea is to give more power to the customer. One fixed price structure [depending on the size of print you order] and the artists all work democratically to the same system. The customer can chose the print they want to own, but now depending on their finances or the size of the space they live in, they can chose the same great work but now are able to specify the size and better control the price they pay. The work is all digitally made to order to the highest giclee print standard, and to keep the cost friendly for the customer, it is made to an open ended edition. Some prints by some artists, whilst open ended, may run to a limited time frame.

We believe this is an interesting way of getting our unique design work out to our customers without compromising artists’ individual standards. Our aim is that this will be a liberating concept and fulfilling experience for both our artists and our customers.
