Karel Martens graduated from the Arnhem School of Art in 1961. Since then he has worked as a freelance graphic designer, specialising in typography. Alongside this, he has always made free (non-commissioned) graphic and three dimensional work.

This exhibtion focusses on Martens contribution to the graphic style of OASE, Journal for Architecture. From 1990 (Issue 28) Martens took over the art direction of the journal, often working with students from the Werkplaats Typografie – an experimental typography school he founded in 1998 with Wigger Bierma. What began as a student magazine, evolved into an international professional journal in which a reflective and critical approach to architecture, urban design and landscape architecture is the mainstay. Recently celebrating its 75th issue, the success of OASE is, in part, due to Martens refined graphic statment, often absorbing his print and typogrpahic experiments and uplholding the dialogue between graphic design and architecture.

Featuring all 56 issues of OASE designed by Martens along with printed matter from his experiemental studio practice, the exhibtion will incorpate an open studio/workshop where Martens will host sessions with students of Visual Communictaion at Monash University.

“The launch of Nokia Pure marks a significant day in the evolution of the Nokia brand. This is not only the launch of a new typeface, but also a celebration of change.

DesignStudio have been working closely with Nokia for over two years to both evolve and develop the Nokia brand. Part of this process has been to look at the key brand assets, including the brand typeface.

Our latest endeavour was to create this event to launch Nokia Pure and to demonstrate Nokia’s appreciation of design.

As the aim of this event was to showcase typography, we collaborated with some of the world’s leading designers and design agencies in order to obtain a collection of outstanding and innovative work.

We also identified the chosen charity partner for the event, The British Dyslexia Association (BDA). We are thrilled to be supporting the BDA, a charity that addresses a condition affecting a significant proportion of people within the design industry. All proceeds will be given to the BDA.”

Yesterday, March 22, the exhibition Erik Spiekermann. The Face of Type. opened in the Bauhaus-Archiv Museum of Design in Berlin. The organisers of the Bauhaus-Archive must have been surprised by the size of the attendance an art form as little known by the larger public as typography could attract. With an intelligent and concise presentation Johannes Erler of Factor Design introduced the visitors to the “Spiekermann principle”. Those who understand German can read the full speech on our German sister-blog Fontblog.

The exhibition shows a cross section of the work of Erik Spiekermann – from the development of his well-known type designs, over various corporate design projects, to the founding of FontShop. It runs until June 6, 2011, so people attending TYPO Berlin 2011 – Shift will be able to visit the exhibition too.

Wim Crouwel, A Design Odyssey / 30 March – 03 July

The Design Museum celebrates the prolific career of the Dutch graphic designer Wim Crouwel in this, his first UK retrospective. Regarded as one of the leading designers of the twentieth century, Crouwel embraced a new modernity to produce typographic designs that captured the essence of the emerging computer and space age of the early 1960s.

Spanning over 60 years, this exhibition will cover Crouwel’s rigorous design approach and key moments in his career including his work for design practice ‘Total Design’, the identity for the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, as well as his iconic poster, print, typography and lesser known exhibition design. The exhibition will also explore Crouwel’s innovative use of grid-based layouts and typographic systems to produce consistently striking asymmetric visuals.

The Design Museum will also release an exclusive wallpaper (pictured above) design by Wim Crouwel as well as an exhibition catalogue designed by Spin. All these items will be available over at the The Design Museum Shop.

Finally, not to be missed the current issue of Wallpaper Magazine (April 2011) with a limited edition cover by Wim Crouwel (for subscribers only).
