Public Works Gallery
1539 N Damen Ave, 2nd Floor (map)
Chicago, IL 60622

opening
Friday, September 9, 2011 – 7-11pm

Public Works 3 is the latest installment of the celebrated Chicago annual art series featuring graphic artists at the hinge of contemporary culture and fine art expression.

EVAN HECOX’s inked drawings capture urban dwellings and their dwellers from New York to Mexico with a snapshot style that’s at once hyper-real and romantic. His work has been featured across record covers and art galleries alike, from Chocolate Industries vinyl to white walls in Tokyo, London and Los Angeles.

ANDY JENKINS began his art career with buddy Spike Jonze. Tinkers by habit, the pair stormed the scene as editors, illustrators, writers and designers for Freesylin’, BMX Magazine, Warp, Raygun – the list goes on. Andy currently heads the art department at Girl Skateboards and holds the reins of the infamous Art Dump.

MICHAEL CINA is an abstract painter known globally for originating YouWorkForThem, a graphic design boutique, and its sister company, WeWorkForThem, an award-winning design studio. Some of his freshest, darkest creations adorn the covers of Ghostly International releases, where his position as art director has created a signature Ghostly style reminiscent of the glory days of Factory Records.

Since the late 90’s CHRIS STRONG has taken the same austere eye with which he photographs solemn, quiet landscapes to music and fashion icons in and around Chicago – Wilco, Joan of Arc, Kid Sister, Metric, Califone and Billy Corgan are just a handful of the artists adorning his record covers and magazine spreads.

20 July – 30 October
Design Museum London

Kenneth Grange is Britain’s leading product designer, his prolific career spans over 50 years and he is responsible for designing some of the most iconic and familiar products and appliances that shape our daily lives. Kodak cameras, the silhouette for the Intercity 125 train, Kenwood food mixers, Parker pens, and the re-design of the London black cab are just some of his well-known designs.

In 1972 Grange, together with Alan Fletcher, Theo Crosby, Colin Forbes and Mervyn Kurlansky established Pentagram, a world renowned multi-disciplinary design consultancy. More recently, in the 1990s, Grange has produced distinctive designs that have become part of our landscape, from the Adshel bus shelter in 1993 to the Rural Post box for Royal Mail in 1998. Today Grange continues to work with British companies including Anglepoise, furniture designer Hitch Mylius and fashion designer Margaret Howell.

This exhibition is Kenneth Grange’s first UK retrospective celebrating his work, design journey and the role he has played in making Britain modern. With unique access to the Grange archive, the exhibition includes over 150 products, prototypes, sketches as well as audio, photography and film.

For the second year running, Brighton University’s latest roster of Graphic Design & Illustration talent will be taking over Rochelle School, Shoreditch, from the 8th – 12th of July.

Akin to last year, the show is entirely funded, organized and curated by the student body.Brighton’s offering to the melee of London graduate shows is consequently a refreshingly honest, energetic and impassioned platform upon which to launch a career within the creative industry.

The uniquely confident interdisciplinary approach taken by the BA (Hons) Graphic Design and BA (Hons) Illustration degrees at Brighton is ever-present in the diversity and ingenuity showcased in this joint exhibition. We see the boundaries of each discipline not only becoming blurred, but pushed to their limits, placing Brighton’s Graphic Design and Illustration graduates at the forefront of emerging talent this Summer.

Overall, visitors can expect an ambitiously cultivated and whole-heartedly student-led experience. This is encompassed not only in the show itself but in discussions and talks which will be taking place at the venue during the evenings throughout the week, with more details to be released online nearer the time.
