Aperture is pleased to present The New York Times Magazine Photographs ($75), edited by Kathy Ryan, which reflects upon and interrogates the very nature of both photography and print magazines at this pivotal moment in their history and evolution. With a preface by former editorial director Gerald Marzorati, this volume presents some of the finest commissioned photographs worldwide in various sections, including reportage, portraiture, style, and conceptual photography, and photo illustration.

Diverse in content and sensibility, and consistent in virtuosity, the photographs are accompanied by reproduced tear sheets to allow for the examination of sequencing and the interplay between text and image, simultaneously presenting the work while illuminating its distillation to magazine form. This process is explored further through texts offering behind-the-scenes perspective and anecdotes by the many photographers, writers, editors, and other collaborators whose voices have been a part of the magazine over the years.

Otl Aicher, Gestalter

Otl Aicher (1922–1991) was perhaps the most influential designer in postwar West Germany. He became famous for his design of the commercial face of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and his sport pictographs, and created the logos for large Germany companies such as Braun, Lufthansa, and BMW. As cofounder and later head of the pioneering Ulm School of Design, Aicher left his mark on whole generations of graphic designers. His connection to the circle around the resistance movement The White Rose was formative for his political involvement. He was married to Inge Aicher-Scholl, sister of Hans and Sophie Scholl, core members of the movement who were executed in 1943.

For this first critical biography, Eva Moser interviewed Aicher’s companions, family members, clients, and friends. Her text is supplemented by private family and professional photos as well as selected examples of Aicher’s seminal design ideas.

After years in the making ‘Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design‘ will be available next month.

This long awaited title on one of the greatest American designers of the 20th century has been written by distinguished design historian Pat Kirkham, who knew Bass personally, and is designed by his daughter, Jennifer Bass. As well as hundreds of images of Bass’ life and work, some of which are previously unpublished, there is a foreword by Martin Scorsese.

The release of the book is also being marked by a special event at MoMA on November 14th, featuring the New York premiere of Saul and Elaine Bass’ Academy Award-winning short ‘Why Man Creates’, 1968 (newly preserved by the Academy Film Archive). Among the evening’s guest presenters are the book’s author, Pat Kirkham, a distinguished design historian; Chip Kidd, the award-winning contemporary graphic designer and writer noted for his brilliant book covers; and Kyle Cooper, a legendary graphic designer in his own right, with such unforgettable film title sequences as Se7en, X-Men: First Class, the Spider Man trilogy, and countless others.

My good friend Brian W. Ferry just informed me his first book “Quality Of Life” is out today…

Quality Of Life, a collection of photographs by Brian W. Ferry. Brian is an American-born, self-taught photographer currently residing in London, UK. He has contributed work to publications from other independent publishers such as Lines & Shapes and Kinfolk Magazine, as well as completing commissions for the likes of Starbucks and Ralph Lauren.

The images included in Quality Of Life were pulled from the vast quantity of photographs that Brian took between January 2010 and January 2011, his first year living in London. Many of them were first shared on his popular blog The Blue Hour, and neatly encapsulate what he has said sums up the nature of his work: a desire to document the small and often seemingly unexceptional moments of day to day life, capturing these quietly beautiful details and making visual diary entries, allowing us to dwell on them with him.
