The New Gothams

Hoefler & Frere-Jones added Narrow, Extra Narrow, and Condensed to Gotham font.

While I was doing research for a personal project I found the work Donald Knuth on computers and typesetting. I was fascinated by the desire of this computer scientist to achieved his goal.

Knuth’s computers and typesetting project was the result of his frustration with the lack of decent software for the typesetting of mathematical and technical documents. The result of his project include TeX (software) for typesetting, Metafont (programming language) for font construction and the Computer Modern typefaces that are the default fonts used by TeX.

I invite you to read these articles on Wikipedia and learn more about this project:

Paula Scher looks back at a life in design (she’s done album covers, books, the Citibank logo …) and pinpoints the moment when she started really having fun. Look for gorgeous designs and images from her legendary career.

I found on magCulture blog this very interesting project made by Really Interesting Group:

We’ve collected some things from the internet we thought would work well on paper and we’ve made it into a newspaper.

If you’d like a copy of this magazine, just go their website and fill in the form.
You can also find more about the concept and its process over here.
