Democracy is a challenging new graphic design exhibition forming part of Design Event, the North East’s annual design festival. We’re aiming to create the ultimate democratic exhibition; we’re inviting designers and illustrators to submit their visual interpretation of the theme of Democracy and only those with the most votes will be featured in the exhibition. All qualifying entries are showcased on this website and you can then vote for your favourite. You can also leave comments on the work and get in contact with the artist/designer behind them.

This project is a unique chance for designers and artists to pit their work against peers from all over the world. It is also a great platform to promote your creative talent to thousands of art-lovers and design-fans engaging with Design Event 09.

There will be no curators in this groundbreaking exhibition: we’re applying the principle of ‘universal suffrage’ so that everyone can get involved and you can decide the piece(s) of work that you consider worthy of appearing in the final exhibition.

The Democracy exhibition will take place in Newcastle upon Tyne in October as part of Design Event 09. It will feature the very best of the work submitted to the project via this website, as voted by you. Votes can continue to be cast on the website and at the exhibition, so the art on display will continue to change, making this the most democratic exhibition ever.

Also launching at the exhibition will be the democracy book, a 244 page permanent record of the project.

About the book:

The use of written language has been one of the most defining developments in twentieth century visual art. Art and Text is a unique and timely survey of this most contemporary and relevant artistic tool.
The use of text can be seen in some of the most seminal, avantgarde artwork of the twentieth century: René Magritte used text as an instrument for Surrealist subversion when he inscribed his painting with the statement “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”, and Dadaist artists used it to describe anti-art and anti-aesthetic sentiments.
Some of the most famous Conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s began to use written language as an artwork in itself, abandoning the juxtaposition of images for the first time. Artists such as John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Martha Rosler and Joseph Kosuth—still some of the world’s most respected practitioners—helped codify the completely new boundaries of what constitutes art.
The expansive Art & Language group of artists and theorists also reconsidered the possibilities of linguistic art, and Art and Text features a new essay by esteemed member, Charles Harrison, alongside essays from Dave Beech and Will Hill.
Art and Text is a beautifully illustrated survey, documenting and contextualising the fascinating relationship between word and image for the first time, and showcasing the many artists who continue to use text and expand its possibilities, including Richard Prince, Raymond Pettibon, Mark Titchner, Roni Horn and Glenn Ligon.

Spain: a country that calls so many famed artists – Picasso, Dali, Goya, Miro, to name only four – its own. Yet, the reputation of its graphic designers has never been fully recognized by the international design community, until now. Pioneers of Spanish Graphic Design establishes, once and for all, the legacy of 15 groundbreaking Spanish graphic designers working between 1939-1975. While that historical era was one of economic and political isolation in Spain these designers elevated the daily grind of commercial graphic design work to the level of true inspiration, altering the visual culture of post-war Spain.

Showcasing the work of Josep Artigas, Alexandre Circi Pellicer, Amand Domenech, Elias & Santamarina, Jordi Fornas, Fermin Garbayo, Daniel Gil, Richard Giralt Mircale, Ernest Moradell, Antoni Morillas, Joan Pedragosa, Josep Pla-Narbona, Manolo Prieto, Julian Santamarina, Tomas Vellve, every chapter in Pioneers is adorned with the work of these designers – posters, book covers, album sleeves, logotypes and packaging – as well as commissioned appreciations of their work penned by contemporary Spanish designers and writers.

Compiled by Emilio Gil, who contacted the designers, their families and sorted through mountains of archives, Pioneers fills in a historical gap that speaks volumes about how these designers influenced Spanish, and international, visual cultures.
