Swiss designer, currently based in Berlin, Filippo Nugara shared with me this video performance based on the emblematic Helvetica letter H.

Video projected in a middle of a rock/electronica concert for a multimedia performance mixing live video and music.
The “H” use the exact proportion of the Helvetica font, who’s a perfect symbol of the swiss culture.

“2d3d” deals with a step-up of dimensions – from linearity to space – and everything in between. More than ever Slanted Magazine even crosses geographical borders, presenting works from Edhv (Eindho ven), Klein Dytham architecture (Tokyo), Pixelgarten (Frankfurt), Maxime Buechi (Lausanne), Ina Saltz (New York), Erwin K. Bauer (Vienna), Sangho Park (Stuttgart) and many others. The sections “Fontlabels, Fonts & Families”, “Fontnames Illustrated ” and “Typolyrics” introduce contemporary fonts and designers from all over the world, followed by interviews with Sabrina Tibourtine, Christoph Dunst, Sipho Mabona, Gemma O’Brien and Mr. David Carson.

Besides a portrait of “Buchstabenmuseum Berlin”, the Slanted Magazine introduces numerous 2d3d-works of professionals and students (Ebon Heath, Yulia Brodskaya, pleaseletmedesign, MWM Graphics, etc.).

The chapter introduction pages are decorated with Hubert Jocham’s headline-font “NeoDepth S8”, exclusively created for this issue. Our readers can download this brand new typeface for free. As the previous issue #7, the cover is wrapped with a poster – the second one of a series of four. By end of the year, the aligned posters will create a sentence. “PORN” was the first word, followed now by “4” … because we believe, that after a step-up of dimensions from 2d to 3d – “4” should follow!

Canadian graphic designer Abi Huynh, currently living in the Netherlands, share with us some pictures of the graduate show of The Werkplaats Typografie program.

The Werkplaats Typografie (WT) is part of ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. WT is a two-year masters programme centred on practical assignments and self-initiated projects. It also serves as a meeting place for graphic designers with regard to research and dialogue.

Joris Landman informed me about this great typographic experimental project by Alban Schelbert: Overtura.

Overtura project started out as a type design project, with the intention of being an update on musical notation. The typeface has its origin in the “Futura-ND” by Paul Renner. OVERTURA is therefore a hybrid of the names “Futura” and “Overture”, a musical term describing an instrumental introduction, choral or instrumental composition. OVERTURA is a geometric sans-serif typeface, which contains a whole letterset of the alphabet characters and also a whole set of notation characters, in order for composers to be able to write and design their sheet music with one single typeface. The typeface OVERTURA contains two cuts, Alphabeto (alphabet) and the Partitura (notation).

The content of the project is a collection of four booklets. The booklet no.X is an “Overture” for piano, which is written and composed by his father Joseph Schelbert. The piece is intended for this project, in order to be the first musical piece that is set in the OVERTURA.

The booklets, no.1-3, are music samples edited by Alban. His father would first write the music and then put it into visual notation. His intention was to start with the visual part, which then is followed by the musical part. The booklets consist of graphical shapes, patterns and images set in OVERTURA.
