In May 2010 the German non-profit art space D21 Kunstraum will host an exhibition of ArtZines – small artist publications that circulate in astounding varieties of forms and shapes, in print and online versions, at more or less regular intervals. These periodicals often refer to the DIY-approach of their predecessors, classic fanzines, which emerged from the ‘70s punk and underground music scene, mostly in the UK and the US.

The ArtZines show will shed light on an artistic medium that not only seems to have continuously gained visibility, popularity and presence in contemporary art institutions. It also addresses the ways in which its producers have adopted new channels of distribution, made possible by the Internet, that support interconnectedness and global coalescence.

In order to present a cross-section of publications that meet the outlined criteria, we have started a far-reaching and extensively communicated open call for zines, of which a selection will be shown in the D21 Kunstraum galleries. Focusing on issues of display and seminal exhibition design, students of the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, class of Systemdesign (Prof. Oliver Klimpel), will develop a design concept for the exhibition. Furthermore, we are working closely together with mzin, a Leipzig-based gallery and bookshop for graphics, art and pop.

A symposium within the framework of the show will bring a number of zine producers, distributers, collectors, curators and readers together. These participants will connect and discuss different facets of their work, outline historical dimensions as well as influential precursors, and the impact of technological advance and digital culture for a traditionally paper-based medium. In addition to that, two workshops will be held, one by the Leipzig-based publishers of spector cut+paste magazine, the second as part of a school project. Both workshops will each explore different practical approaches and techniques in the production of ArtZines.

ASIA’S FIRST DESIGN FILM FESTIVAL LAUNCHES IN JANUARY 2010

This January, Anonymous presents A Design Film Festival 2010. This will be the first film festival in Asia dedicated to design. Audiences can expect an eclectic selection of films on architecture, graphic design, art, motion graphics, photography and guerilla culture.

From the highly anticipated Herb & Dorothy, the story of a postal clerk and librarian who amassed one of the most important contemporary art collections; to Milton Glaser, the creator of I heart New York – the line-up of films hail from around the world.

Curated by noted local art director, Felix Ng – the festival is the second collaboration between Anonymous and Old School, following the highly regarded Dual City Sessions: Null in 2007.

The concept is simple: “Itʼs not often what we create as designers or artists get captured in film. Itʼs either in a museum, a gallery or talked about in some small independent press. Now weʼve found this 8 films that celebrate the design process and through a medium that speaks to the non-designers as well.” says Ng.

A Design Film Festival established a special partnership with onedotzero, the highly regarded international motion art festival from the United Kingdom. The three films, Extended Play 09, Craftwork and J-Star 09 will be onedotzero’s only screening in Southeast Asia.

The festival will also feature bonus content by some of the world’s most innovative thinkers from New York, London, Sheffield, Helsinki, Bangkok and Stockholm. The bonus content will be screened in a format similar to film trailers shown prior to movies – as a glimpse to the curatorial team’s personal favorites of the year.

The film festival will run from 20 – 30 January 2010, with 15 screenings of 8 different films. It will be held at Sinema Old School located at 11B Mount Sophia, Old School, B1-12, Singapore 228466.

Ticket prices range from S$12 – $15, excluding ticketing charge. Tickets can be purchased through the festival’s official website, or at Sinema Old School.

Statement for External Release December 15, 2009

To Readers, Advertisers and Friends of I.D. Magazine:

Since 1954, I.D. Magazine has served as one of America’s leading critical magazines covering the art, business, and culture of design. Today it is with regret that we announce its closure. The January/February issue of I.D. will be its last; subscribers to I.D. will receive Print magazine for the balance of their subscription.

Ceasing publication of an iconic brand like I.D. is never an easy decision, but there are several forces that have worked against its sustainability. Certainly the downturn in print advertising has contributed to this decision, but other factors include the fragmentation and specialized information needs of I.D.’s core readers (product designers) and the plethora of information resources available to them – some for free (online and B2B) and others that are highly specialized and targeted to specific industries served.

F+W Media will continue producing the I.D. Annual Design Review, its flagship international product design competition, in an expanded fashion online. This new web initiative will feature not only 2010′s winners but will catalog thousands of notable entries from past competitions. Going forward, in addition to the I.D. Annual Design Review, F+W Media’s Design Group is comprised of the award-winning HOW and Print brands – magazines, books, events, and competitions serving the information needs of graphic designers in all media.

We thank the entire I.D. community, past and present – staffers, contributors, readers, and advertisers – for their support of the magazine throughout its 55-year history.

Sincerely,

Gary Lynch Publisher & Editorial Director F+W Media Design Community
