Darren Firth of Wearitwithpride presents Now Showing – Exploring the lost “art” of film poster.
40 plus creatives were given the task of creating their own interpretation of a Cult, Classic or Obscure film poster from the past, whether it be a literal or abstract solution.
The result is Now Showing, an Art exhitbition paying homage to more than 70 years of film, through the form of Prints, One Off Screen Prints and Sculptures.

The idea for my poster is applying the international style of design to a series of films which you wouldn’t traditionally expect to see.
I expected most of the other contributors to the exhibition to choose films which were cult status and cool so I wanted to try and approach it from a different tack and hence I purposefully chose a genre of films which were uncool and a little bit naff [albeit brilliant in their own right] and and also they didn’t fit in with having the swiss style of design applied to them. I also wanted to choose a film franchise so I could explore a generic style to a range of films.
I decided to apply the very powerful design of Josef Müller-Brockmanns Opernhaus Zürich posters to this topic. The grid has been slightly tinkered to fall in line with grid Wim Crouwel created for the Stedelijk poster [most significantly vormgevers - which was designed in the same year that both these 2 films were released] and for the icon area in the middle of the poster I have taken the diagonal grid used by Otl Aicher to create the pictograms for the 1972 Munich Olympics. I decided to use these 3 sets of rules to create these posters as the styles were all from a similar era to the original films but wouldn’t [and shouldn't] have been an influence on the original poster designs for these serious of films.
