The Toronto subway has a typographic heritage all its own, starting with a unique font. But, with renovation after renovation and after a series of new station additions, signage and wayfinding in the system are a total mess. The latest “standardâ€? in Toronto subway signage uses fake Helvetica and is a clone of Massimo Vignelli’s work from 40 years ago.

CR says:
In June 1995 Creative Review became the ï¬?rst magazine to launch a free monthly editorial CD-Rom. Back then, CD-Rom was an exciting new publishing medium. We were able to use it to give our subscribers access to commercials, music videos, sound toys and all kinds of other interactive content. It cost a small fortune but, while we were able to ï¬?nd sponsors to help support it, the disc became a very valuable means of encouraging people to subscribe to the magazine. Now, of course, the kind of content our CD provided is ubiquitous. YouTube has a thousand times more content than all of our CDs put together and it’s completely free. What is less easy to ï¬?nd is beautifully produced printed content. Which is why we have decided to launch Monograph, a 20-page A5 booklet. Every month, subscribers will receive this new publication absolutely free.
Each month it will feature a different project or collection of creative work. The ï¬?rst issue, which went out with September’s CR, featured highlights from the poster collection of Spin creative director, Tony Brook.
